Years farming: We’ve been farming for 31 years.
My family: My husband Ron and I were married in June of 1980. We have three sons – Steve, and the twins, Michael (Mike) and Brian. Steve is a graduate of Butler University and works in Chicago. Mike just graduated from Illinois State University and works in Vernon Hills. His twin brother Brian just graduated from St. Ambrose University and will be attending graduate school at West Virginia University.
How I came to be a farmer: I married a farmer and it became my way of life, too.
The best thing about being a farmer: Farming is a way of life and also our business. We have the opportunity to work with our children and teach them a good work ethic. We grow and raise food for others while being our own boss. And as a bonus, we work with quality people in agriculture.
My personal philosophy on farming: Do your best and take pride in what you do, while protecting the land for future generations.
Soybean Production in Illinois and the United States
- When soybean plants ripen in the fall, they dry out, change color from green to brown, and lose their leaves. Before the ripe soybean pods fall off the plant, farmers harvest them using a combine. The combine separates the soybeans from the rest of the plant.
- After they're harvested, soybeans are processed. They're cleaned, cracked, dehulled and separated into soybean oil and soybean meal.
- Soybean meal is high in protein and nutrients, and is used to feed all kinds of animals. Soybean oil goes into everything from food to printing ink to fuel.
- The vast majority of U.S. soybeans are eaten by farm animals. In fact, poultry, pigs and cows consume 98 percent of all U.S. soybean meal.
- Here in Illinois, farm animals - mostly pigs - account for about 94 percent of the state's total soybean meal use.
- You might be surprised to learn that some of the Illinois soybean meal is also used in aquaculture, to feed the fish.
- Soybean oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the United States, representing 65 percent of all edible fat and oil consumed by people.
- Soybeans are also a key ingredient in many foods such as tofu, soy milk, soy flour, soy sauce, soy burgers, and edemame (green soybeans that have been harvested before they ripen). Demand for soyfoods is on the rise.
- More than nine million acres of soybeans are harvested in Illinois every year - that's 14 percent of the nation's total soybeans.
- In Illinois, 54 percent of the state's soybeans are exported. Illinois ranks third nationally in agricultural exports, with soybean exports estimated at $2.3 billion.
