Location: Cordova, Maryland
Years farming: My family has been farming in this area for 10 generations and I’ve been doing it for 32 years.
My family: My wife is JoAnn, and we have two kids. Our daughter Melissa is 28 and a schoolteacher. And our son Jason is 27 and works with us here on the farm. He has a 15-month-old daughter and a son that was born in late 2011. My dad and other family are also involved in the farm.
How I came to be a farmer: I am the tenth generation – it is all I ever wanted to do.
The best thing about being a farmer: A true sense of accomplishment – working in balance with the weather, the soil and the environment.
My personal philosophy on farming: We feed the world and it’s our responsibility to be a reliable supplier.
Grain Production in Maryland and the United States
- Maryland farmers planted approximately 480,000 acres of corn in 2011.
- In addition, Maryland farmers planted an estimated 300,000 acres of winter wheat in the fall of 2010, the largest acreage estimate since the 1949 planting of 343,000 acres.
- From seed to fertilizer and everything else it takes to get a crop in the ground, each spring when farmers plant their fields, they are making a $426 million investment in the state.
- There are 12,800 farms in Maryland with an average size of 160 acres.
