Location: Mardela Springs, Maryland
Years farming: I’m almost 20 years old and the fourth generation of farmers, having grown up on the farm.
My family: The third and fourth generations of farmers are now in charge, including my parents, aunts and uncles, and many cousins.
How I came to be a farmer: Being four generations deep, my generation plans on taking over operation of the farm in the upcoming years.
The best thing about being a farmer: My family works hard to produce a safe favorite summer treat for everyone to enjoy. I really just had a passion for being involved.
My personal philosophy on farming: Growing up on the farm has given me such a passion and respect for farming and the dedication that’s put into it. It has made me want to educate consumers and share that passion with as many as possible, while encouraging them to support their local farmers.
Watermelon Production in Maryland and the United States
- Watermelons and other produce grown in the state are served in schools statewide through the Maryland Farm-to-School Program.
- By weight, watermelon is the most-consumed melon in the U.S.
- Delaware is among the biggest watermelon producing states in the United States, along with Florida, Texas, Colorado, Michigan, Iowa and Indiana.
- The first seedless watermelon was developed in 1939 and is actually a hybrid, with seeds that don't fully develop.
- The first watermelons were grown over 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Egyptians drew pictures of watermelon harvesting on walls.
